Biography

Piero Ottinetti’s work emerges from the postwar system that shaped modern Italian graphic design—where education, practice, and institutions operated as a single continuum. Trained in Rome at the Convitti Scuola della Rinascita (1947) and the Accademia di San Luca (1948), and later active in Milan in connection with the Triennale di Milano, his formation reflects the consolidation of design as a disciplined modern profession.

1. EARLY LIFE — CALUSO / TURIN

Born in 1927 in Caluso, Italy, Piero Ottinetti pursued his early artistic training in Rome, attending the Convitti Scuola della Rinascita (1947) and the Accademia di San Luca (1948). The Convitti Rinascita, emerging from the Italian Resistance, were part of a broader effort to re-democratize the country. He continued his studies in Milan in 1951 within the postwar Rinascita milieu of advertising and graphic design. Formed in the years following World War II, his early work developed alongside Italy’s industrial and cultural reconstruction—a context that shaped his lifelong commitment to clarity, structure, and visual economy.

2. MILAN — STUDIO & DESIGN WORK

In Milan, Ottinetti co-founded Studio IPI TRE, working at the center of postwar Italian graphic design. His work evolved in connection with the Triennale di Milano, a central institution in the renewal of Italian design culture. Working with major European industrial clients, including Pirelli and Philips, he developed a disciplined modernist approach that combined Swiss typographic rigor with the expressive precision of Italian design.

3. UNITED STATES — CHICAGO

In 1970, Ottinetti relocated to Chicago, where he served as Art Director for Kemper Insurance, extending his work into large-scale corporate identity programs. There, he translated modernist principles into the operational language of American business. In later years, he turned increasingly to painting, extending his visual vocabulary into more personal and expressive forms while maintaining a continued commitment to formal clarity and structure.
